    Sunday 31 March…

is Easter Day, although we’re not there yet. First, we have the early drama of the Sacred Triduum, with the coming two days providing us with an opportunity to enter into the mystery of our Lord’s passion through the sacred liturgy. Christ has entered Jerusalem on his final journey. Events will unfold as he is betrayed and handed over. He will then be executed on a hill outside Jerusalem under Pilate’s sentence. But, unbeknown to the mocking crowds, God is working out the salvation of the world by defeating death. Only then will the joy of love Eternal spring from the grave. Despite the sorrows, we shall surely rejoice this coming Sunday!

As we journey in prayer through the days of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection, may the Spirit enable us to bring our own trials and triumphs to the Lord of all mercy – and those of the parish and of the world too. And may our faith be renewed as we marvel at the drama that is God-with-us.

    Fr Lincoln

    THE SACRED TRIDUUM

    28 March – Maundy Thursday

7pm Mass of the Last Supper and Vigil until 9pm

    29 March – Good Friday

12noon The Reading of the Passion, the Veneration of the Cross, and the Mass of the Pre-Sanctified

    31 Easter Day

    10.30am Sung Mass with Baptism

    BAPTISM ON EASTER DAY

We are delighted that Kaan will be baptised during our Sung Mass on Easter Day. Please pray for Kaan over the coming days and beyond. And let us rejoice that the Lord is adding to his number.

EASTER DAY: RELICS OF THE SAINTS

Our Church extends through time and into eternity, with each generation passing on the gospel to the next to the glory of the Risen Christ. Our building therefore bears witness to the faithful work of those who have followed Jesus before us, and it does so in astonishing ways. The “Cassone” is a good example. It’s the gold and red chest set up on the plinth in Our Lady Chapel. It contains seven reliquaries, with physical relics of a number of Saints. As part of our celebration of Christ’s victory over death, our communion with the Saints will become tangible – the reliquaries will be brought out and placed on the High Altar. May their presence inspire us to share the gospel in word and deed like the Saints, and may their prayers surround us.

    EASTER DAY: EGG HUNT

There will be no Sunday School on Easter Day as we want to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord together. It promises to be a remarkable occasion for us all, with plenty of drama to engage all ages. When Mass ends (and the Regina Coeli has been sung), the children will be invited to search around the church for some hidden Easter Eggs. Of course, we want to avoid a mad scramble – of kids, not eggs – so do please accompany your child as they search and supervise them at all times. There should be more than enough eggs for everyone of varying size, but please encourage the older (and likely more successful children) to share with the little ones too. Thank you!

    GOOD NEWS! NATIONAL CHURCHES TRUST

We’re delighted to have been awarded a grant of £6,500 by the National Churches Trust. This money will enable us to begin some feasibility studies in church, with our architect working out what is needed - and what is possible - as we look to repair our building and develop our facilities to enable wider community use. We are very grateful to the National Churches Trust. You can read more about their excellent work here: https://www.nationalchurchestrust.org/about-us

SUNDAY 7 APRIL: A CELEBRATION OF THE ANNUNCIATION

Because Easter falls this week, our annual “Celebration of the Annunciation” will held be at the 10.30am Mass on Sunday 7 April. Another one not to miss!

MONDAY 15 APRIL: MIDWEEK MASS RESUMES

We are delighted that our midweek masses will resume on Monday 15 April at 12.30pm, and then Monday-Friday each week thereafter. Do come along to pray in the peace and quiet of our Lady Chapel. Each midweek Mass lasts around 20 minutes, so they are ideal for taking a pause during a lunchbreak.

MONDAY 22 APRIL: SPRING BIBLE STUDY AT THE VICARAGE

Our Spring Bible Study focuses on The Letter to the Philippians. This is short letter is rich in content and ideal to read together prayerfully as we seek to grow in knowledge and love of God. The evenings will run from 6pm-7pm for four weeks only, beginning on Monday 22 April. We will then meet on the 29 April, 13 May, and 20 May (avoiding the bank holiday and half term). If you’re interested in coming along, do email Fr Lincoln for further details.

WEDNESDAY 24 APRIL: FREE LUNCHTIME CONCERT

Our next lunchtime concert is on Wednesday 24 April. The Forgotten Melodies Society’s Lunchtime Concert will again feature young musicians from the Royal Academy of Music. Do please come along to support these concerts and hear some beautiful music in a stunning setting. 24th April. 1:15-2:15pm Free Entry!

    PASTORAL SUPPORT

Fr Lincoln is available for pastoral support and prayer. He is happy to plan occasional offices, such as baptisms, which start up again after Easter. Do get in touch if you need support or have any questions.

    GENEROUS GIVING

We need everyone at the Annunciation to commit to regular giving, ideally making use of the “Parish Giving Scheme” to support the mission and ministry of our church. We want to respond to God’s call to reach out and serve the people of our neighbourhood and maintain our wonderful building. Your generosity is essential to making that happen.

    Sunday 24 March…

is Palm Sunday. Holy Week begins.

Mass on Sunday will begin with the annual Blessing of Palms. This act represents the palm branches that the rejoicing crowd scattered in front of Christ as he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. Our vestments, however, will be deep red, reminding us that the crowd’s cheers will soon call for Christ’s blood. Sunday’s liturgy draws us nearer to the betrayal and execution of the Son of God.

The week ahead will then be filled with ever-increasing drama in church. We continue to practice the “Fasting of the Eyes”, with all our statues and ornaments cloaked in red and the Triptych above the High Altar closed shut. We will also have the washing of feet, the removal of ornaments, the garden of repose, and the prayer vigil till 9pm on Thursday evening, before the veneration of the cross within the barrenness of an unadorned church at noon on Good Friday. Everything we do will focus more and more on what happened at Golgotha.

But good news. Easter Day beckons from beyond the sorrowful drama we’ll inhabit. The sacred Triduum will culminate in a time of great rejoicing when we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord on Sunday 31 March.

But for now, we wait. There is a solemn week for us all to enter.

    Fr Lincoln

    Sunday 17 March…

is the 5th Sunday of Lent. Passiontide begins.

We will now practice the “Fasting of the Eyes”, with all our statues and ornaments cloaked in red and the grand Triptych shut tight. It means the Stations of the Cross, lining the walls of the nave in three dimensions, will begin to demand our attention. Everything we will do over the coming weeks will focus more and more on what happened at Golgotha within the barrenness of an unadorned church. God dies for the ungodly, that we may live. Let us marvel at his grace. Let us pray for those who suffer.

Our sombre season is nevertheless punctuated by joy. It will be wonderful to welcome back Fr Gerald Beauchamp to preach on Sunday. May God bless him and us – and thanks be to God for Fr Gerald’s decade of faithful witness here in Marble Arch.

    Sunday 10 March…

is the 4th Sunday of Lent. It is also the day that we celebrate “Mothering Sunday”.

There’s so much for us to celebrate on Mothering Sunday. A good mother is a gift to treasure, as Our Lord himself knows. But Mary’s own life was marked by deep sorrow and pain, and there’s no doubt that Mothering Sunday can be a very painful and sorrowful day for many people, not least in causing grief over absence. We will therefore mark the day as a joyful solemnity, seeking to celebrate motherhood and bear one another’s burdens – just as many a mother does for her child.

Sung Mass, with Sunday School, begins at 10.30am.

Can you bake a cake or biscuits or anything savoury like sausage rolls, quiches, etc, to donate on the day? They can be dropped off at the school from 8.45 am on Wednesday 20 March.

FRIDAY 22 MARCH: DEAF CHURCH EASTER PRAISE

Our friends in the Deaf Church are planning an Easter celebration on the evening of Friday 22 March. If you’re able to help with refreshments and welcome on the evening, do please let Fr Lincoln know.

SUNDAY 7 APRIL: A CELEBRATION OF THE ANNUNCIATION

Because of the timing of Easter this year, our annual “Celebration of the Annunciation” will be at the 10.30am Mass on Sunday 7 April this year. Further details to follow!

    CHURCH OPENING NEXT WEEK

The church will be open for private prayer from 12noon until 3pm next week. There will be no lunchtime masses, though we hope these can restart soon.

    CONFESSIONS DURING LENT

Throughout the Church’s history, Christians have confessed their sins during the holy season of Lent. The Sacrament of Reconciliation (i.e. Confession) is a wonderful way to encounter God’s forgiveness by being freed from the burden of guilt and receiving his grace to walk onwards in faith. Please contact Fr Lincoln if you would like to learn more or to arrange to make your confession.

    PASTORAL SUPPORT

Fr Lincoln is available for pastoral support and prayer, and for hearing confessions. He is also happy to discuss occasional offices, such as baptisms. Do not hesitate to get in touch with him if you need support at this time.

    JOIN THE CHURCH ELECTORAL ROLL

Our church has an “electoral roll”. It’s not Westminster’s (which enables you to vote in elections). Instead, the Church of England registers regular baptised worshippers. These lists are often used by schools (such as Hampden Gurney) in their application process, as well as enabling the enrolled to vote at the annual church meeting. If you’re baptised and have been worshipping at the Annunciation for at least six months, please do join our Electoral Roll if you haven’t already. It’s very quick and very easy. Please contact Fr Lincoln for details.

CONFIRMATION CLASSES: DATES FOR SUMMER TERM 2024

Fr Lincoln will be running Confirmation Classes at Hampden Gurney School during the summer term. Classes will run on Wednesdays, 3.30pm – 4.30pm, on the following dates.

    Wednesday 22 May

    Wednesday 5 June

    Wednesday 12 June

    Wednesday 19 June

The Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally DBE, Lord Bishop of London, will confirm candidates at our School Mass on Thursday 4th July at 10am. If your child is in years 5 or 6 and is interested in exploring whether to take this next step in the Christian faith, please do email Fr Lincoln by Monday 25 March. He will then send through further details and guidance.

And if you are an adult who wishes to be confirmed, please let Fr Lincoln know so that arrangements for separate classes can be made.

HOLY WEEK AND THE SACRED TRIDUUM

Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday when we celebrate the arrival of Jesus into Jerusalem. He rode into the city on a donkey, passing through an excited crowd who were shouting “Hosanna” as they waved their palm branches. Our Palm Sunday service will include the annual Blessing of Palms.

We will then journey towards the three most solemn days of the Christian year, when the betraying crowd cries out for Christ’s crucifixion. The Triduum will begin on Thursday evening. This unusual word means “three days”, and it is during these three days that the church keeps one sustained festival, celebrated in the liturgies of The Last Supper, the Lord’s Passion, and culminating in the joyful celebration of the resurrection on Easter morning.

Do please come to celebrate the gospel in the astonishing setting of the Annunciation. With choir, music, silence, candlelight, prayerful liturgies, and much more besides (including an Easter Egg hunt for the children), we will marvel at the passion and resurrection of our Lord. Service times are listed here.

    24 March – Palm Sunday

10.30am Sung Mass and the Blessing of Palms

    28 March – Maundy Thursday

7pm Mass of the Last Supper and Vigil until 9pm

    29 March – Good Friday

12noon The Reading of the Passion, the Veneration of the Cross, and the Mass of the Pre-Sanctified

    31 Easter Day

    10.30am Sung Mass with Baptism

    GENEROUS GIVING

The Annunciation is a self-financing charity, with no historic trusts or legacies, and we receive no external funding beyond that which we can raise for ourselves. Our astonishing Grade II* building also remains on Historic England’s “at-risk” register and requires constant remedial work to keep it open. Nothing comes cheap!

We need everyone to commit to regular giving, ideally making use of the “Parish Giving Scheme” to support the mission and ministry of our church. We want to respond to God’s call to reach out and serve the people of our neighbourhood and maintain our wonderful building, and money is essential to making that happen.
